Five Minimalist Necessities to Help You Relax

Regardless of whether you live in a large house or a van, you need a place to relax. Self care is an essential part of life, and it is important to have a few items that can help you slow down. 

Minimalism isn’t just about what you get rid of, it is also about what you keep. I have identified five simple things that can help create the sanctuary you need in your life. 

1. Mood lighting. Warm dimmed lighting can help set the mood for relaxation. I love candles because they set a soothing tone. You may not own candles, but have you considered installing sources of light that come from the side rather than above? I have always preferred my rooms be lit with lamps rather than overhead lighting. Light that comes from the side is a lot less aggressive and helps me slow down.

2. A soft place. It is very easy to create a nest for those days where you need to feel warm and safe. I have two fluffy cushions on my couch and four pillows on my bed. When it is time to relax, I want my back and neck to be supported. I often combine all my pillows and cushions for maximum softness.

3. A high quality knit. You have probably already figured out that I’m super intense about knits. In winter I’m all about warm soft fibers, especially merino and cashmere. An excellent way to get comfortable is to drape yourself in your favourite wool.

4. Reading material. I love reading. Getting lost in another world is the ultimate form of relaxation for me. I love physical books with real pages that I can touch and smell. I have a small collection of my favourite books which I can read over and over again.

5. Warm beverage. I am a lover of hot drinks, and specifically tea. I have a different tea for every occasion, and on an average day I have at least three. Tea helps me wake up, it gets me through the afternoon slump, and you know I have tea for relaxing days in. When I sit down to watch the rain or read a book, tea is an absolute necessity.

  1. I just found this book at the library- The Little Book of Hygge, by Meik Wiking. The author heads up an institution in Denmark trying to figure out why exactly Danes self rank the happiest people in the world. He believes it’s due to the Danish value on hygge. Your list encapsulates the spirit of hygge perfectly. Wiking also writes on the importance of lighting, spending time regularly with family, and quality over quantity. You may find it a valuable read, I know I did!
