Five Minimalist Life Hacks

There are many new habits that I have started since I began minimising my life a year and a half ago. Today, I want to share the easiest ways I’ve found to declutter and downsize my belongings. In the minimalist tradition, I shall keep things simple.

Here are five life hacks that will help you simplify and declutter your life.

  1. Organise things in categories. We all have a lot of stuff, even if we are in the process of minimising. Storing things in categories is a basic organizational tool to keep you on top of your belongings. Not only does this make it easy to find them, but it also means you can see how many of those things you have. When you place all your black shoes together, you might find that you have a couple pairs too many.
  2. Get rid of duplicates. When you organize things in categories, it is easy to see whether you have doubled up on things. Most people do not need more than one of anything. Unless your objects have specific purposes, and you use them often, you can probably afford to let them go. If you have more than one of something, say goodbye to the duplicate.
  3. Find new functions for things. One of the biggest hacks to reduce the range of things you own is to find new functions for your things. You don’t need specialised products for specialised purposes. On this blog I have talked a lot about exploring the versatility of objects, especially when it comes to my wardrobe, beauty and cleaning products. I’m sure there are many more examples you can think of yourself!
  4. Limit your range of clothing. Most of this blog is about my wardrobe, and how I keep it small. In case you still need convincing, having a smaller wardrobe has many benefits! If you are new to all this, what I would focus on specifically is having a smaller variety of colours and fabrics. Limiting your choices makes it easier to match, style, and maintain your wardrobe.
  5. Digitize. Converting physical objects to a digital format is one of the simplest ways to reduce clutter. Paper, photographs, books, DVDs and CDs takes up a surprisingly large amount of space. You can scan photographs, documents, bills, convert CDs to mp3, and purchase your books and films in digital formats. The possibilities for compression are endless!

  1. I used to read books on a Kindle but I grew tired of it. Every book seemed the same on grey e-paper. I’m back to reading paper books but now I give them away to students or co-workers when I’m finished with them. Unless I really like a book. Then I’ll keep it on my shelf.

  3. I have to say, my paper books are tough to give up and I don’t care for e-readers. That said, I love my area libraries and do my best to borrow a book first before buying it. Ditto for movies and dvds
