Minimalism and Moving House | Part 1

30 items of clothing, 8 pairs of shoes, 2 bags

A while back I mentioned that I was in the process of moving house. I have now officially moved into my new place, and today I want to talk about my motivation for this change.

When I moved into my previous place, the move was inspired by abundance. This was the first time in my life I’d had a reliable income, and the first time I felt like I could get whatever I wanted without consequence. In the process of moving and acquiring new belongings though, I got overwhelmed, and turned to minimalism.

Last year, with all the decluttering of physical objects I was doing, I started to think about how I could downsize emotionally. I started to question what I wanted to do with my life in the future. My job allows for financial stability, but does it give me joy?

With this thought I started to visualise where I wanted to be in the future. In the last few months I decided it was time to start acting towards that future. While I am not making any drastic changes at the moment, I am working towards these two scenarios:

  • I want to have financial flexibility in the form of savings
  • I want to have the option of leaving full time employment

With those factors in mind I have been plotting behind the scenes. Essentially the biggest part in moving forward is adapting a more frugal lifestyle.

My move has been a result of this realisation. I have downsized to a cheaper home further away from the city.

In Part 2 I will discuss the logistics of moving house as a minimalist.

  1. This is where I was at the beginning of the year. Minimalism really helped me sort through most of the mess that I had going on inside of me and the quarter-life crisis I was going through. Several months later, have a better idea of how I want to live my life and have started to make moves towards that ideal life.

  2. I love this idea of financial independence through decreasing overhead! It doesn’t require you to change careers, and it’s something almost anyone can do. I applaud your efforts and look forward to the rest of the story. Thanks for the post!

  4. I watched a great documentary on Netflix about the minimalist concept. I think it may have therapeutic benefits….meditative in some ways. I would love to see future research done on a link between Anxiety reduction and a minimalist lifestyle. ~Dr. K

  5. Part of my motivation is that I feel like life is moving so fast, and it is, because I’m super busy all the time! I really want to slow things down. I want to spend more time doing things that matter – hiking, writing and connecting. Thanks for reading! 🙂
