Five Minimalist Hacks to Give You More Time

30 items of clothing, 8 pairs of shoes, 2 bags

Regardless of what we want or do, our time here is limited. I consider time to be my most precious resource. Today I would like to share five hacks to give you more time.

  1. Robot vacuum. I have talked about my little friend before, mostly in the context of dealing with excess pet fur. As I write, he is cleaning the house for me. I still own a real vacuum cleaner, because this guy will not clean as thoroughly as the other one, however he saves me a lot of time every week. The only thing I need to do is move furniture out of the way, and let him do his thing.
  2. Food shopping fortnightly. I used to shop for groceries once a week, and now I have managed to reduce this to once a fortnight. Shopping fortnightly does require a lot of meal planning and trial and error to begin with. If you plan well, however, it is possible to have an excellent diet with minimal supermarket trips.
  3. Cook in bulk. Cooking every night takes a lot of time. Between preparing the food and cleaning, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. Cooking larger meals actually takes almost the same amount of time, and reduces the time you spend in the kitchen weekly. Try to prepare at least double the food you need. It helps to prepare meals that can be frozen, as this will ensure longer storage and ultimately more variety.
  4. Fitness routine. Try to avoid fitness classes, as these come in rigid timetables. To save time, it’s best to create a fitness routine based around your existing schedule. Perhaps you could ride, run or walk to work, or do these on your way between places. Choose convenient locations between your home and daily activities. This will save you travel time and reduce ‘idle’ time lost waiting in between scheduled activities.
  5. Go online. I just discovered the Internet! Did you know that you can do just about anything online these days? Pay your bills online. Renew and pay subscriptions online. Do your food and clothes shopping online. Get online accounts for anything you do in real life, this will save you a lot of time travelling between physical destinations and talking to real people.

  1. “Try to avoid fitness classes” – now that’s my kind of time-saving tip! I also save time by avoiding makeup and other high-maintenance appearance-related things. The fortnightly shopping is a great tip, too – we do one big shop at the beginning of the month and top it up with perishables (fruit, vegetables, milk) partway through the month. Saves so much time and effort!
